European Data Space for Smart Communities Bootcamp in Ljubljana, Slovenia (16–17 September 2025)
In mid-September, Ljubljana hosted a two-day Bootcamp of the European Data Space for Smart Communities initiative, bringing together 11 pilot projects from across Europe. The aim of the event was to accelerate the technical and strategic development of a shared, federated European data space for smart communities.
The Bootcamp offered participants a valuable opportunity for hands-on collaboration and knowledge exchange on key topics such as interoperability, governance, business models, and data sharing between cities and communities across Europe.
Collaborative Learning and Co-Creation
The first day focused on refining data product concepts and exploring the latest approaches to trust and security within data spaces.
The UrbanMind team, combining expertise in data science and urban planning, contributed practical insights from the development of urban data spaces that integrate environmental, mobility, and spatial data. Their approach emphasized the importance of human-centric solutions designed around the real needs of cities and their residents.
The second day was dedicated to federation design – developing joint structures for collaboration among pilots. Discussions addressed fair governance, value sharing, and the long-term sustainability of data ecosystems. Teams worked together to create proposals for cooperation and presented ideas on how to connect their local initiatives within a broader European framework.
Connecting for a Shared Future
With more than 75 experts from across the continent, the Bootcamp once again demonstrated that face-to-face collaboration is essential for building trust and common standards.
As Gernot from FIWARE highlighted:
“Only by following shared standards can we achieve interoperability.”
With this message in mind, the pilots — including UrbanMind — left Slovenia with a clear goal: to strengthen collaboration, openness, and sustainability in European data spaces, laying the foundations for the smart, connected, and resilient communities of the future.
